The Proper Choice of Keywords

The proper choice of keywords is an important tool in an internet marketing plan. Your product has to be great, your sales page must be compelling, but a large factor in getting people to your site is going to be your keywords and how you use them. Once you choose the right keywords and use them properly your potential clients coming to your site. Once on your site you have to do the right job in making the sale, but, it all starts with the proper choice of keywords.

One of the hardest aspects in the proper use of keywords is learning what words are actually being searched by a potential client when they are looking for your product. This means that people who are searching for your product need to know the right keywords people are looking for. When I say that, it means: people are looking and searching on the internet for products a certain way. They type in certain words, phrases, and in a certain order when they are trying to find something. This is the information you need to be successful. If you can find these words and phrases, and they are related to your products and services, then just serve it up them.

Not knowing your keywords is common, and frustrating. It is not uncommon for a site owner to find that a totally unconsidered keyword results in the highest amounts of visits to a site. Unfortunately, it is also not uncommon for a site owner to fill their site with appropriate keywords only to have no visits.

For example, if your site is related to weight loss, "weight loss" is not going to be a powerful keyword for you. There are over 150 MILLION results for "weight loss" in Google. 7 MILLION for "weight loss program" and another 1.5 million for "weight loss programs". Breaking the weight loss program down more, you can have:

* weight loss program free - over 8 million
* weight loss program for free - 2 million
* weight loss program reviews - 1.5 million
* weight loss program for women - 1 million
* weight loss program at home - 10 million
* weight loss program at work - 6 million

If you want to get specific, go as far as "weight loss programs" "at work" "working mothers" and the double quotes means that the exact phrase has to be there and you will find over 100 sites with those phrases.

Your objective is not to load your site with the very short keyword, but a longer keyword phrase that is an accurate description of your website. The process is simple enough if you know your product and your client. There are some useful search services available; possibly the most useful for determining how often a keyword phrase is searched is the Google Suggest site (http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=1&hl=en).

Once you have your keywords research done and the words properly placed in your website you can wait for traffic to come rolling in! Actually, NO YOU CAN'T. Internet marketing is not just choosing one keyword phrase and hoping for results. After the choice of your keywords they must be properly placed on your website.

Remember, the proper choice of keywords is an important part of your overall internet marketing plan, but it is not all. You have other marketing aspects to work on to make you website more visible to your future clients who are surfing the internet. Your proper choice of keywords is an important first step.
