How To Acquire The Right Mindset For International Sales In my experience the right mindset is more important in international sales negotiations than in domestic sales negotiations. In sales negotiations in domestic markets there are several other factors that are equally important to the right sales mindset: the offer, your prospects needs, your prospects objections, etc. In cross cultural sales negotiations, you will often need the appropriate international mindset simply to get taken seriously. You see, I’m actually talking about two different mindsets. If you are just starting out in international sales you will probably not really understand what the right international mindset is, until you’ve done it a few times. This will take the blinkers off. But even then you will probably only understand after you witness first hand a seasoned international sales person in action. Why does it take so much in situation learning? Because we all have different definitions for any vocabulary used to describe good cross cultural communication. Cross cultural miscommunication happens almost continually. The right mindset is used to refer to the process of opening up your mind to other cultures, devoid of any standard language contamination. It’s not easy. People can feel threatened very easily in unfamiliar territory. Good international sales negotiators know themselves well. They are able to open up themselves without prejudice to other cultures because they feel confident enough about their own self knowledge. Acquiring the right mindset for good international sales negotiations demands personal adjustment. Good international sales skills go beyond implementing market research. It is something you need to practice, like riding a bike. And just like bike riding, once acquire the right mindset, you will be able to use the same skills throughout all cultural communication.
